    You say it’s not octopus’ fault. Sorry it is their meter, no one else’s. Re customer service I’m with them as well and have constant emails to increase my direct debit to keep my account in credit. My account has never been out of credit and both of the last two years I have recovered some credit. They are treating customers as a cheap source of financing!

    I had a similar problem. Used to work then just stopped. Octopus then sent an engineer out and checked the signal, said it was a bit low so added a new antenna for the meter. The engineer then said the signal was within bounds but again nothing coming through to Octopus. I moaned a bit as i didnt understand how it could have been working fine before and now even with a new powerful antenna it wasnt working. Another engineer came out said the meter isnt talling to the network and he then restarted the meter. this required a power shut down and amazingly after 8 months it all started working again. So maybe a restart if the meter might help you.

    First off, I should say that Octopus have ultimately been great and yes, you can actually talk to real people (or perhaps a very convincing AI anyway....)...but, it took well over 2 years from switching to Octopus to finally get a proper, reliable, working setup. As with Jonathan, it wasn't down to Octopus but simply a poor signal. I spent a very long time trying to convince Octopus of this and I confess, at one stage I lost my sense of humor and was rude on the Octopus forum. I did apologise! To their enormous credit, they did respond to this, despite the rudeness, to the extent I had the Octopus CTO talking to me and trying to get it gripped. This helped for a bit but ultimately, and finally, I persuaded them that the real solution would be the 'SKU2' WAN comms module. Of course, they didn't just fit a new module, which would have been quick & easy, it was another new meter, and the installer was rubbish. He turned up late, full of excuses and clearly did not want to do the job. I eventually persuaded him to do it, I'd already provided a path to the loft for the antenna, I even installed it for him, but he still left the meter non-functional with a promise to return shortly. Of course, he didn't. A couple of months of back & forth followed but eventually I got to speak to one of the technical guys. He quickly established that the installer had failed to update my account with the MAC of the new meter so of course, it wasn't communicating. The guy updated the info from the MAC I read out to him off the meter and within moments, it was talking. He even commented that this was the fastest data rate he'd ever seen. The real issue was poor 2G signal. I knew this from the start but it took a very, very long time to get them to act on that. It seems the absolute last thing they want to do is fit one of those modules with the external antenna. I've no idea why.... Anyhoo, since the day it was finally(!) set up properly with the SKU2 module, it has been 100% reliable. The bitter irony is that the meter they took out originally had actually been communicating OK comms wise, but there was a 'bug' that meant by the time the data reached Octopus, it was reporting double my actual usage,meaning I had to have the bills manually adjusted every month. They fixed the bug just before the new meter go installed..... It shouldn't be this hard!

    I'm on Agile Octopus and I see half-hour readings on my octopus account. I'm pretty stunned that the smart meter works because it's installed in a solid metal box with a metal door. (It used to be where the (really) old style fuses were.) I've often wondered how any EM signal gets out at all.

    Fascinating that with all the attention given to climate issues (particularly air quality) so few people take the issue of zero tail pipe emissions into account when listing their purchase criteria. The ability to charge at home, or lack of, will always restrict the market for EV's until serious effort is made to address this limitation, charging at public chargers is (mainly) far too expensive to make owning sufficiently economic. Also, can't understand why more effort isn't put into efficiency by the manufacturers, Hyundai Ionic still sets the benchmark and it's a 10 year old design drive train.

    • @JonathanPorterfield
      @JonathanPorterfield 23 часа назад

      I agree , air quality should be TOP priority in drivers minds when they are looking at a replacement vehicle , but sadly we humans tend to be inherently 'selfish' and dont think their own actions matter , and besides , "why change my habits of a lifetime, im sticking with fossil fuels as EVs are not the answer" and stop thinking about air quality. The motivation for most drivers ive seen over the years is 1st saving money on fuel costs / servicing , 2nd is , im doing my bit for the planet ! It should be the other way around !

    What about the second hand EVs with close to 100k miles on the clock? I see loads of them at a good price but being sold 100 miles to the battery warranty, which is usually 80-100k. How would you approach buying these vehicles? Cuz once you are out of the shop, you are pretty much out of warranty. I want to get into EV, but this is the part where it still gives me goose bumps. I know it's better to buy better/newer/less mileage EVs, but not everybody can afford that. Thanks.

Want to spend around £17k on an EV, narrowed my choice to Kona, Soul or now having watched a few of your videos a Niro 4+, had a Kona Premium SE before however they're now out of warranty, the Niro seems nearly there, just wish it had a HUD wish I miss. The Kona Ultimate nor any of the Soul's have a heat pump which I loved in my Kona, instant heat to clear the ice from the windscreen and warm me on a winters day. Lots of choice on autotrader but how the hell to know what is a good price these days is giving me a headache. Can you help ? My smart meter was switching on my hot water at midnight but charging me peak rate until 12:30am. The result was an overcharge of £65 over 5 months. EDF credited me the money back but if I hadn't checked why my bill seemed higher than it should have been I would still be being overcharged. However it was because of the smart meter that I was able to see that I was being overcharged. EDF adjusted the charging at their end, without sending anyone to my house. This was a mistake that never should have happened and I am wondering how many thousands of people are being overcharged in this way without them knowing, because they either trusted their electricity supplier or haven't the ability to figure out why they are being overcharged. Bear in mind that most people are not prepared stay up until two o'clock in the morning to see what their smart metre is doing and how to understand the readings. If millions of people are being overcharged in this way it will result in billions of pounds more profits for the energy suppliers.

I saw a seat Mii ev for £6800 at auction, the a petrol vw UP , same year and miles sell for £9800 , the EV is a much better car and massively less to run and maintain long term. InstaVolt are now 85p per kw/w, BP Pulse, Osprey and the rest are 79p per kw/h as of May 2024 for rapid charging. The average cost is 56p per kw/h for public slow/fast charging as of May 2024. I'd love to own an electric car, but I'd have to build a driveway and install a home charger, to be competitive with an IC car. The costs are prohibitive. Why is public charging so expensive? The government need to get that cost down and improve the charging infrastructure to encourage widespread electric car adoption. Electric car deprecation at the moment is great for second hand buyers but awful for new owners. These new Chinese electric cars entering the market are a game changer, it's a rapidly changing and interesting car world we are in right now.

    I have a very similar meter to yours on octopus and initially they couldn't wouldn't fit the gas meter. When they finally did it didn't integrate with the heads up display HUD. But it was sending data to octopus since it could be seen on the bright phone app as I was trying to get the gas reading to be uploaded to my home assistant via a 3rd party app. Anyway every so often they send a Morrison's data person around when we aren't home and so we end up having to enter the gas and electric meter reads onto a website anyway. Frustrating and meaning that the upgrade from digital dumb 2 rate meter to smart meter wasn't really much better.

    Smart meters are none of the sort! I had mine fitted 5 years ago and when they were installed the engineer said the gas meter wasn't communicating with the electricity meter (the meter that sent the readings to my energy company)! He gave me some BS about it sorting itself out usually within about a month and left - it has never worked! Countless calls to my providers asking them to replace the gas meter communication modules etc have never been rectified so I am left with having to crawl behind the TV to take a manual reading of the gas meter, every month for 5 years! The electricity meter sometimes doesn't send up to date data, so I then have to do the same with the electricity meter as well! They are both SMETS2 meters, so I haven't got the problem of the 1st gen 'so called' smart meters, but the energy companies will always try to blame this as the root cause of the problem! I should have stayed on a dumb meter because that's all my 'smart' meters are anyway and I wouldn't have had all the hastle of the last 5 years! Smart meters are complete Bull Poo!

    As you're in the north, your smart meter will use the Arqiva transmitters rather than the phone network. We had the same issues and I fixed it by installing a pair of passive antennas linked by coax. Arqiva transmitters are usually located on tv transmitter masts, so point one antenna at the tv mast and put the other near the meter. I used a basic dipole, but slimjim antennas have more gain, buut are more directional. Installed the antennas, then rang octopus remote comissioning to get the to resend the start up command to the meter and was working shortly after. The guys at octopus were helpful but didnt seem to have come across the concept of using a pair of passive antenna to propogate the signal But, yeah - its a system designed to be silly complex in terms of the umber of organisations involved

      Neat! I've not heard of anyone else doing that before. I used a pair of 2.4GHz passive antennas to join together my gas meter and electricity meter. The house has super thick stone walls and the meters are about 15m apart. Works perfectly and we get 30 minute readings of gas relayed to our energy supplier.

    I don`t see exactly WHY anyone would need a `Smart Meter`...unless they really feel the need to be anal about a poxy leccy bill and cream over the phone more than they actually do checking every ten seconds how much leccy the kettle uses. I have no `smart` meters...never had a problem giving meter readings every month and roughly know what both my evergy bills are....without all the anality.

    my gas one stopped working around dec 2022... kept contacting them(BG). It was updating on the gas meter, but not forwarding the numbers..at one point their intervention made the meter revert to the dec 2022 value... 3 months it took em to fix it.... I'd complain more,, but I had 3 months of free gas. shrug.

    Smart meters have one major issue and it applies to all of them. They rely on a mobile network to connect to your supplier, this is fine in an area with plenty of masts, but useless in rural areas. I keep receiving letters from Scottish Power to book an appointment Not a chance, i have to go outside to use my phone, so a smart meter indoors will never work.
